This past weekend (March 15-16) was the World Hung Fa Yi Kung Fu Association public seminar and workshop held at the Hung Fa Yi Headquarters in San Francisco California. Several of my sihingdai and I were able to attend the event this year, and by all it was considered a great success. I’d like to extend my sincerest thanks to the members of the San Francisco Hung Fa Yi Family who, as always, were very gracious hosts. I’d like to specifically recognize Director Allen Kong for his efforts in organizing this event, as well as Sibaakgung Alex Oropeza for his invaluable corrections to my structures. Of course, the whole weekend would not have happened without the teaching and dedication of Grandmaster Garrett Gee to whom all Hung Fa Yi Wing Chun practitioners owe a great debt of gratitude.
On Saturday’s session we were challenged by Grandmaster Gee with the deceptively hard question of: “How do you define wing chun?” And while we had many good guesses, such as a system based on efficiency, or a system that does taan/bong/fook chi sao, none of the answers were very specific. Grandmaster Gee the spent the remainder of the workshop taking us through the various components that define Hung Fa Yi Wing Chun. We started by exploring the idea of using Kiu Sao on the centerline, and how it can give rise to an innumerable amount of techniques, but in the end all it comes back to is a simple Kiu Sao expression. Next we built to the idea of expressing shoulder line to centerline using the opening motions of the HFY wooden dummy form. We discussed on how the motions can be used in application and then how they can be used as a setup to apply Hung Fa Yi’s box theory. Once we had moved to “inside the box” we were able to focus on various types of trapping based on Hung Fa Yi’s 4-gate and 6-gate Tien Yaan Dei structures. Lastly, we covered the ideas of Hung Fa Yi’s Duei Ying and Juei Ying facing concepts, defining the ways that someone goes from having opportunity to having advantage. Though the exercises were few in number this weekend, they described each concept with such pure clarity, I’m sure that all Hung Fa Yi practitioners walked away with an upgraded understanding of just what does make up Hung Fai Yi Wing Chun. Thank you Grandmaster Gee for sharing your system with us.

This past weekend Grandmaster Gee shared numerous insights into further understanding Hung Fa Yi. From the description of wing chun to specific theories, again, I had challenges both mentally and physically keeping up with the pace that Grandmaster set for us.
A special thanks to goes to the San Franciso family for shaing and correcting in my training and that of everyone else. It was great to strenghen relationships with members of the family from long distances as well as meet new famly members. A "Thank you" never seems to be enough to adequately express the grattitude that I feel for Grandmaster Gee and his continued lessons of Hung Fa Yi and Kung Fu life. I have much room left for personal growth. I wish all good health and continued training. Respectfully, Taylor |

Hey thanks Eric!
This was a very important workshop. Not only because of the material that was presented, but also because it was a time for our family to work together, show their mutual respect and dedication for our great system that is HFYWCKF. I also want to thank GM Gee, for leading in accordance to with our motto: "in all directions.. one family" The workshop went very well. Kind of a back to basics on one level and a furthering of the core system knowledge on another. It was also nice to have Simon from John Crescione's WC school participate. His enthusiasm at the seminar was appreciated as was his genuine love for the art of WC. On a personal note, I want to thank Mike Mathews from Ohio, for the sparring session. His KF experience was not only very helpful but also fun to engage. Looking forward to the next time we can all get together once more.
